There comes a time in everyone’s life when you are going to be moving from one location to another. Whether this is from buying a new house, downsizing to an apartment or just relocating, it can be a costly affair. After moving two years ago I can personally attest to how trying it can be. It seems like you are finally hitting the home stretch when you secure a new home, however many costs are yet to come. Today we are going to be taking a look at saving money when moving.

Declutter First

One of the first things that you can do is get rid of all your extra things. With things like Ebay, Facebook Marketplace, Offerup, it is easier than ever before to sell things locally. You can even try having a garage sale. Recently, I helped my parents when they sold their home of 25 years and moved into an apartment. We were able to clear out several rooms by just listing items on some of these online forums. If you are looking to just get rid of items, you can even list it for free on places like Craigslist to try and get it taken away.

For bigger items, you can even contact companies that do estate sales and see if they will haul it away and auction it for you. We were able to sell several larger furniture items this way without having to move it ourselves! There are several companies that do this, so you should do your research and find the best fit. This is not only great for saving money when moving but also for putting some extra cash in your pocket.

Rent a Moving Truck

This can seem counter productive, as it costs something to rent a truck. However, the time and gas savings can be tremendous. I was lucky enough to have access to a pick-up truck and my SUV when I was moving which helped cut down on trips. However, we still need to make multiple trips to get everything into our new home. Depending on how far you are moving it may be smarter to just rent a truck.

Given the fact that Uhaul rentals seem to be everywhere, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a rental truck if you are trying to do it yourself. This way you can just load up the rental and take everything you need to at once. They also have trailers if you have access to a vehicle with a hitch, saving you on some of the mileage costs. The cost benefit ends up helping you while saving money when moving.

Hiring a Company For Long Distance Moves

If you are planning a longer move, or have a significant amount of stuff, it may cost less to hire a moving company. Not only will they help you get everything out of your current location, but they will also get it into the place as well. One of the options that I can recommend is New Jersey inc. Moving Company They are a local moving company to me that handles moves both residential and commercial. Hiring a moving company can save you the back and forth between two locations and the hassle of renting a truck.

Another thing they are known for is New Jersey long distance moving. Whether you are moving across the country or just to another state, one of the hardest things can be getting your stuff there. Hiring a moving company can save you tremendous time, which in turn helps in saving money when moving.

New Jersey Transport even offers packing and transporting of a vehicle if need be. If you are looking to hire a moving company they are a great local company for the Tri-State area.

Buy Things as Needed

One of the biggest mistakes people make is buying things before they are in their new home. My suggestion is to buy things as needed. Of course you are going to need things for your bedroom and bathroom upfront, but some items can wait. I personally invested too much money in setting up a home gym that I don’t use enough to justify the cost. The best thing you can do is to wait until you know you are going to use something to buy it. That way you can save some money when you are moving into your new home.

The other thing you can do is identify items or furniture that you know you will need and shop around. There are always sales around holidays which can help you get some items for cheap. If your town has a bulk pickup day you can even scour the neighborhood for some furniture that just needs some elbow grease to back to it’s former glory.
